Description

Numbers 26 to 60, even, and their attached railings are a terrace of houses dating from approximately 1845. The buildings are constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond, with stucco finishes, and have roofs hidden behind a parapet. They are arranged as three storeys above a basement, generally featuring two windows to the front, except for number 26 and number 50.

The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor decorated by banded rustication. Steps lead to round-arched entrances, with recessed doors within a further round arch of smooth stucco. The ground-floor windows are round-arched and recessed within a round-arched panel of smooth stucco. First and second-floor windows are flat-arched, with first-floor balconies supported on iron brackets. The buildings are united by a parapet, with stacks on the party walls.

Number 26 has a single bay facing the street, with its principal facade located in St Paul's Place and apparently much renewed. It features a round-arched central entrance with pilaster jambs, a panelled door, a fanlight, and flanking round-arched windows, with one window blank. The upper windows are flat-arched with balconies to the first floor.

Numbers 28 to 34 have doorcases with pilaster jambs, retaining original panelled doors to numbers 28 to 34, and decorative glazing to the fanlights of numbers 28 and 32. Balconies with iron brackets and railings are present at numbers 28 to 34, along with original sash windows to the second floor of number 28. Number 36 has a simple moulded doorcase and cast-iron balcony.

Numbers 38 to 48 similarly feature doorcases with fluted quarter-columns, decorative glazing to the fanlights of numbers 40 to 48, original panelled doors, and balconies with cast-iron brackets and railings. Original sash windows are present to the first floor of number 44 and the second floor of number 46.

Numbers 50 to 60 also share the doorcases with fluted quarter-columns, decorative glazing to the fanlights of numbers 54 to 58, original panelled doors, and balconies on cast-iron brackets for numbers 48 to 56. The upper storeys of numbers 50 to 60 have been covered with stucco. Number 50 has a broad tripartite window to the first floor instead of the usual two, and a tripartite window with a segmental arch to the second floor.

The cast-iron railings to the area of numbers 26 to 60 have spear-and-tassel finials and panels of anthemion ornament. They are decayed in places but appear to be original throughout.
