Description

Numbers 6 to 12 (even) and attached railings are a group of terraced houses dating from around 1845. They are built of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond, with painted stucco finishes. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet. The houses are three storeys high with two windows each, separated by a slightly recessed vertical panel. The front of the houses steps back one brick’s depth between numbers 8 and 6, and between numbers 12 and 10. The entrances are flanked by Doric pilasters supporting a simple entablature, dentil cornice, and blocking course. Original panelled doors are found at numbers 8, 10, and 12, each with an overlight. All windows have flat arches and moulded stucco architraves; the ground-floor windows have cornices resting on consoles, while the first-floor windows have simple cornices and window guards. The windows are 6/6 sashes with margin lights, except for the second-floor window at number 12. A moulded stucco sill band runs along the second floor. Chimney stacks are located on the party walls. The railings at numbers 8 and 10 are replacements. These houses are visually linked as a group with numbers 14 to 24 St Paul’s Road.
