Description
Numbers 55 to 85 (odd) and the attached railings are a group of terraced houses dating from approximately 1845. They are constructed of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond, with stucco detailing, and have roofs of Welsh slate and artificial slate. The properties are arranged as three storeys over a basement, with two windows each, except for number 85, which has three windows alongside a recessed, three-storey entrance bay.
The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor decorated with banded rustication. Steps lead to round-arched entrances; numbers 55 to 61 have pilaster jambs, a cornice, and a fanlight. Number 55’s fanlight features decorative glazing, while number 59’s fanlight is blocked. Numbers 63 to 85 have engaged Greek Doric columns, a cornice, and a fanlight. Original design panelled doors are present at numbers 63 to 5, 71, 75 to 81. The ground-floor windows are round-arched. A sill band marks the first-floor windows, which are flat-arched with gauged brick heads, except for numbers 63 to 5, where the brick heads are stuccoed over. A stuccoed cornice and blocking course is visible at numbers 55 to 61, although original mouldings are only preserved at numbers 57 to 61. Numbers 63 to 67 have a stuccoed stepped parapet that replaced the original cornice, while numbers 69 to 85 retain a stuccoed cornice. Numbers 55 and 57 have late 20th-century roof extensions, numbers 59 and 61 each have one dormer, and numbers 63 to 85 feature a mansard roof with two dormers each. Party wall stacks are present. Cast-iron railings are attached to the area, and an overthrow is present at number 77.
