Description
This is a row of terraced houses, dating from around 1840, situated on the south side of Noel Road in Islington. The buildings are constructed of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond, with stucco finishes. They have Welsh and artificial slate roofs, where visible. The houses are three or four storeys high, with a basement level, and each has two windows.
The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor featuring banded rustication. A round-arched entrance, flanked by pilasters, has a fanlight, which is blank on houses numbered 28 to 54. Original panelled doors are present, with variations at numbers 18 and 54. Ground-floor windows are also round-arched, and the stucco finish terminates at the first-floor sill band. The upper-floor windows have flat arches with gauged brick heads. Iron balconies are present on the first floor; the windows have original sashes, including radiating glazing bars to the ground floor at numbers 12 to 18, 20 (ground and first floors), 22 to 32, 34 (ground and first floors), 36 (ground floor), 38, 40 (ground floor), 42 to 48, 50 (ground and first floors), 52, and 54 (ground and first floors).
The parapets have been largely rebuilt, although numbers 24 to 30 retain a brick dentil cornice, numbers 32 have a stucco cornice with decorative lead flashing, and number 42 has a late 20th-century modified stucco cornice. Mansard roofs are present on numbers 14 (with one segmental-arched dormer), 16 (two dormers), 20 (two dormers), 26 (two dormers), 28 (one dormer), 30 (one round-arched dormer), 34 (one dormer), 38 (one dormer), 40-42, 46 and 50 (each with two dormers). Numbers 36 has a roof extension, and number 52 has one round-arched dormer. Cast-iron railings are attached to the area.
The rear elevations feature flat-roofed extensions to the basement and ground floors, overlooking the Regent's Canal. Originally, these rear elevations probably featured two openings with four-centred arches at basement level, two flat-arched windows above with 6/6 sashes with pointed arches in the upper sash, and an embattled parapet. Many of the houses retain some of these original rear features, and numbers 22-4, 28-30 and 50 retain all.
