Description
This is a row of thirteen terraced houses, numbered 23 to 47 (odd), built in 1848-52 and developed by James and Thomas Ward. They form a symmetrical group, with numbers 31 and 39 slightly set back. The houses are constructed of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco finishes. The roof is hidden behind a parapet. Each house has three storeys above a basement and originally had two windows facing the street.
The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor exhibiting banded rustication. There are stone steps leading to flat-arched porches, and recessed entrances are framed by moulded stucco architraves. The front doors originally had round-arched panelling, though this feature is missing from numbers 25, 29, 39, and 45. The ground-floor windows have a segmental arch, while the upper-floor windows are flat-arched, with stucco architraves and a cornice to the first floor. Window guards are present on the first-floor windows, and there is a stucco band below the moulded cornice of the parapet. The area railings are unusually ornate, featuring castellated standards and palmette finials.
