Description
These are two early 18th-century terraced houses of brown brick with red brick dressings and a clay-tiled roof. They are three storeys high, with a basement, and each has three windows. Each house has a flat-arched entrance in the inner bay, featuring simple architraves and coupled hoods supported by foliated scrolled brackets; panelled doors are set within these entrances. The ground and first floor windows are segmental-arched with red brick dressings, and contain 6/6 sash windows that are almost flush with the wall. A parapet tops the building, and there are dormers in the mansard roof – one to number 56, and two to number 57.
The interior of number 56 was not accessible at the time of listing. Inside number 57, the entrance hall has a panelled dado along the party wall with number 56 and unmoulded panelling on the opposite side. A wooden cornice is present, and this panelling arrangement continues up the staircase to the first floor. The dog-leg staircase features turned newels, turned balusters, and a moulded rail from the basement upwards, although the balusters on the final flight have been renewed. The downstairs room is fully panelled with moulded rails and muntins, an elaborate wooden cornice, though some replacement panelling is evident, likely due to the joining of two rooms. Both the front and corner fireplaces have been considerably renewed. The first-floor front room is also fully panelled with moulded rails and muntins and a wooden cornice. The mantelpiece, complete with an eared architrave and corniced shelf, was likely introduced later.
