Description

These are two terraced houses, built between 1761 and 1762 by T. Rosoman, who was a builder and later the owner of Sadler's Wells Theatre. The houses were part of a larger row constructed by Rosoman, which originally extended to include the buildings now on the site of numbers 19-22. They are built of brown brick with a clay tiled roof. The buildings are four storeys high and each has three windows. The original ground floor appearance is obscured by 19th-century shop extensions, although console stops to the fascia remain as the only surviving feature. The first-floor windows have flat arches, while the second-floor windows have very slightly segmental arches, all with gauged brick heads and moulded sash boxes that sit flush with the wall. The first-floor windows have 6/6 sash windows, and the second-floor windows have 3/3 sash windows. A storey band runs between the first and second floors. The parapet has been rebuilt, and there are dormers in the mansard roof. Chimney stacks project from the party walls.

Inside number 23, the original staircase features an open string with brackets, a wreathed and ramped handrail and turned balusters (some of which have been replaced). The staircase has a modillion cornice with acanthus and bead-and-reel ornament as far as the second landing, where it simplifies, and a panelled dado that changes to tongue-and-groove boarding on the third landing. Original architraves remain around the doors of all rooms from the first floor upwards, as well as around some cupboards flanking the fireplaces. The front room on the first floor has a modillion cornice with egg-and-dart and acanthus ornament, a panelled dado with a renewed rail, and panelled window embrasures. The back room on the first floor has a similar cornice and panelled dado, with some surviving wall panelling. The front room on the second floor has a panelled dado, a simple modillion cornice, panelled window embrasures, and an eared architrave to the fire surround and mantelshelf. The back room on the second floor has a simplified modillion cornice. The third floor has simple wooden fireplace surrounds.

Inside number 24, the original staircase has an open string, brackets, a wreathed and ramped handrail, and turned balusters, although most of the balusters have been replaced. A panelled dado, architraves, a modillion cornice, and panelled window embrasures are present on the staircase and on the front room of the first floor. The front and back rooms on the second floor have only a panelled dado, cornice, and architraves. Plain deal panelling is found on the staircase on the second and third floors.
