Description
Numbers 12-26 on Frederick Street is a terrace of eight houses built around 1827-1832 by William Cubitt. The houses are constructed of stucco, with numbers 20-24 featuring slated mansard roofs and dormers. The terrace is irregular, with projecting end bays and a central bay.
The projecting bays, which include numbers 12, 18, and 26, rise four storeys above basements and each has one window. The ground floors are rusticated stucco, while the first floors have plain stucco sill bands. The doorways are square-headed with panelled jambs, cornice-heads, fanlights, and panelled doors. Paired pilasters with enriched capitals extend through the first and second floors, supporting an entablature at the third floor level, which is simplified on number 26. The first floor windows feature cast-iron balconies; numbers 12 and 18 have four-light windows, while number 26 has a tripartite sash. The second floor has recessed sashes with a sill band. The third floors of numbers 12 and 18 have paired pilasters flanking recessed sashes, topped with a cornice and blocking course, while number 26 has paired pilaster strips reaching the top of the parapet and flanking a 20th-century window.
The recessed bays, which include numbers 14, 16, and 20-24, are three storeys high with basements, and numbers 20-24 have attics. Each of these houses has two windows. The doorways are similar to those in the projecting bays, with square-headed designs, panelled jambs, cornice-heads, fanlights, and panelled doors. The first and second floors have sill bands and recessed sashes, with the first floor featuring cast-iron balconies. Number 20 has a cast-iron foliated and floral window guard on the ground floor. Numbers 14 and 16 have an entablature and blocking course, while numbers 20-24 have an entablature without a cornice.
The terrace also includes attached cast-iron railings with bud finials to the areas in front of the houses.
