Description

Numbers 34-40 on Frederick Street are a terrace of four houses built between 1827 and 1832 by William Cubitt. The houses are constructed from stucco and feature plain stucco first floor sill bands. Numbers 36 and 38 have slated mansard roofs with dormers. The terrace is symmetrical with projecting end bays.

The end bays, which are Nos 34 and 40, have rusticated stucco ground floors and rise to four storeys with basements, each having one window. They feature square-headed doorways with panelled jambs, cornice-heads, fanlights, and panelled doors. Each house has paired pilasters with enriched capitals that extend through the first and second floors to support an entablature at the third floor level. The pilasters flank a four-light window with a cast-iron balcony on the first floor and a recessed sash with a sill band on the second floor. The third floors have paired pilasters supporting entablatures and blocking courses, with No. 34 having a recessed sash and No. 40 a recessed casement.

The central bays, Nos 36 and 38, are recessed and consist of three storeys with attics and basements, each having two windows. They also feature square-headed doorways with panelled jambs, cornice-heads, fanlights, and panelled doors, along with recessed sashes and cast-iron balconies on the first floor. The terrace is topped with parapets.

The attached cast-iron railings with bud finials provide additional decorative detail to the areas in front of the houses.
