Description

This is a terrace of five houses, known as Nos 54-58, built between 1834 and 1849 by W Forrester Bray. Currently, Nos 54 and 55 operate as hotels. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick, with some later patching, while Nos 54 and 55 feature red brick parapets and No. 56 is painted. The ground floors of Nos 54-56 are finished in stucco, and there are plain stucco sill bands on the first floor. The buildings have slated mansard roofs with dormers.

The ground floor openings are round-arched. No. 54 has a single-storey stucco portico extension on its return, featuring a round-arched doorway flanked by fluted Doric three-quarter columns that support a cornice-head, along with a fanlight and a panelled door. Nos 55-57 have architraved doorways with pilaster-jambs and cornice-heads, each with fanlights, including a patterned fanlight for No. 57, and panelled doors, with No. 56 having a 20th-century door. No. 58's doorway is adorned with fluted Doric quarter columns and a cornice, along with a patterned fanlight and a panelled door. The windows feature gauged-brick flat arches and recessed sashes, with the first floor windows set in shallow arched recesses. There are cast-iron balconies on the first floor windows and parapets on the roofs.

The terrace is complemented by attached cast-iron railings with bud and other finials surrounding the areas. The interiors have not been inspected.
