Description

This building is a set of offices constructed in 1909 by Alfred Hart and Leslie Waterhouse for Willing Advertising. The carvings are by William Aumonier. It is built of red brick with stone dressings, with a stone second floor and a right-hand bay. The steeply pitched mansard roofs are covered in slate and feature dormers. Windows have small leaded panes.

The building is in a French Baroque style. The exterior is irregular, with three storeys and attics, and five storeys in the right-hand bay. The left-hand three bays form a slightly projecting pavilion with a round-arched central main entrance. Pilasters flank the entrance and are surmounted by large winged lions supporting a large, seven-light bowed window with an enriched apron, segmental-headed lights, and pilasters supporting a cornice and domed roof in an arched recess. Transom and mullion casements with aprons are located on either side of the entrance. The first floor features segmental-arched enrichment with small keystones. The second floor has paired stone Ionic columns to the outer bays, flanking two-light windows and supporting a modillion entablature with a round-arched balustrade (piers with swags and features terminating in balls) above. A central dormer has a transom and mullion casement, flanked by scrolled consoles. The roof is surmounted by a statue of Mercury. The central block has three windows with casements to the ground and second floors (a three-light centre flanked by two two-light windows). An arched feature is present on the first floor with keystones and aprons. An entablature extends across the façade. A central gable has scrolled consoles, flanked by two stepped gables. A projecting right-hand bay has an arched vehicle entrance to a courtyard, flanked by carved tablets. A canted oriel window is above the entrance, with three round-arched lights with keystones, attached columns supporting an entablature and pediment. Above this, a three-light casement window and entablature are present. The entablature is surmounted by a Venetian window-type feature and a round-arched balustrade around the top of the bay, with piers featuring details terminating in balls. A rectangular lantern, with round-arched openings, pilasters, and a projecting cornice (broken back at the angles), rises from the top of the bay. The roof of the lantern terminates in a ball finial. The interior was not inspected.

Attached to the building is a stone wall with piers and low cast-iron railings.
