Description
Big Chill House is a public house located at 259 Pentonville Road in Camden, dating from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of stucco and features three storeys and cellars. Its symmetrical design includes five bays, with the end bays slightly projecting. The ground floor has a public house frontage adorned with granite pilasters that support an entablature with a dentil cornice. Above the entrances are segmental pediments with enriched tympani. The windows on the ground floor are modern, featuring large panes.
Fluted Corinthian pilasters extend through the first and second floors, paired to flank the end bays and return, supporting an entablature. The frieze above the paired pilasters includes wreaths, and the parapet is finished with dies without balusters. The first-floor windows are architraved and recessed, with cornices, and the central and end bays feature tripartite arrangements.
The interior of the ground floor bar was entirely stripped out during an inspection in January 1995. Overall, the exterior of Big Chill House is a particularly attractive example of a mid-19th century public house.
