Description
No. 17 is a terraced house that has been altered for commercial use, dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, with stucco details and a roof that is hidden by a parapet. The building has three storeys above a basement and features a three-window range. The basement and ground floor are decorated with banded rustication. The entrance is segmental-arched and includes an architrave, keystone, and a panelled door that retains its original design. The ground floor has a flat-arched window with a bracketed sill, an architrave, and remnants of ogee-patterned glazing bars. There is a deep fascia with bracketed stops above. The upper windows are flat-arched with simplified architraves, and the central pediment on the first floor is missing. The original design includes 6/6 sash windows. A stuccoed entablature and blocking course are present at the top. To the right of No. 17 is a stuccoed, basket-arched carriage entrance, numbered 17A, which has the inscription 'WORKS & MILLS' and the date 1846, along with fluted impost blocks. The two storeys above the arch are now part of Nos. 19-35 Balfe Street.
