Description

Nos. 295 and 297 Pentonville Road is a flat iron block of shops with offices above, prominently located at the junction of Gray's Inn Road and Pentonville Road. Built around 1875, it was constructed to replace buildings that were destroyed during the construction of the Metropolitan Railway. The building is made of brick with stucco dressings and has a triangular plan with a rounded apex. Most of the shop fronts have been altered.

The upper floors feature architraved sash windows: the first floor has windows with keystones and console-bracketed pediments, the second floor has bracketed sills, keystones, and console-bracketed cornices, and the third floor has windows with keystones. A continuous sill band is created by a deep, projecting, bracketed cornice. Above the third floor windows is a further cornice and blocking course, topped at the apex by a tall lead-sheathed tower, which is sometimes said to have been used for spotting fires. This tower includes a cast-iron balcony at half-height, an oculus, and a cornice capped by a small ribbed dome with a weathervane finial.

The interior has not been inspected. Known as "The Lighthouse Building," it serves as an important local landmark.
