Description

The Great Northern Hotel, built in 1854 by Lewis Cubitt, is a hotel located on Pancras Road in Camden. It is constructed from yellow stock brick with stucco dressings and features a slate roof with pedimented dormers. The building has a crescent shape, with a concave main facade facing King's Cross Station.

The hotel stands five storeys tall, with an attic and basement, and has a total of 18 windows across its width. The southern return has five additional windows, with a slightly advanced central bay. The sixth and thirteenth bays are also slightly advanced and feature tripartite windows with stucco dressings. The first and second floors have triangular and segmental pediments, respectively. The main entrance is located on the left side and is adorned with a cast-iron and wood portico, featuring round-arched glazing. The ground floor openings are round-arched, with stucco keystones and impost bands. Plain stucco bands are present at the first, second, and third floor levels, while other windows on these floors are square-headed with stucco architraves. A modillion cornice and prominent slab chimney-stacks complete the exterior. The road facade is similar in design.

The interior has not been inspected. The hotel is also accompanied by attached cast-iron railings with a geometric design. Historically, the curved plan of the hotel reflects the original alignment of Pancras Place, now known as Pancras Road. It was one of the first hotels to offer rooms on the "continental system," featuring bedrooms en suite with sitting rooms. The hotel was noted for its fireproof construction, with thick walls dividing each room and corridors built of brick arches supported by iron girders.
