Description

34B York Way is a warehouse built in 1873 by architects Thomas Marsh Nelson and William Harvey. It features yellow stock brick with stone dressings. The street elevation has three bays and two storeys, with arched windows that were blocked at the time of inspection, and a segmental arched carriage entrance with a keystone. There is a moulded impost band at ground floor level and a moulded string course above the fascia board at first floor level. Projecting brick piers are located between the upper windows, and there is an eaves cornice with heavy brackets.

Inside, two rows of cast iron columns support I beams that carry the first floor. The upper floor retains a composite roof with hipped ends made of timber, which is supported by tension-braced iron tie- and king-rods that span the entire width of the warehouse. A glazed lantern is situated above.

Originally, this warehouse served the adjoining black lead and blue manufactory in Albion Yard. The roof structure is particularly notable for its unusual design and is a significant survival from the period.
