Description
No. 7 Caledonian Road is a commercial building dating from around 1875, which was refronted around 1900 by architects W H Romaine-Walker and Tanner. The lower two storeys are faced with red brick, featuring rubbed and moulded brick details in a 17th-century artisan mannerist style. The upper two storeys are tile-hung, using fish-scale tiles interspersed with bands of plain tiles to highlight the main lines of the building. The top-floor window frames are made of terracotta, and the roof is obscured.
The building has a 20th-century shopfront in the centre, with a doorway set in an ear'd architrave that includes a fanlight and a curved pediment above. To the right, there is a wide brick carriage entry. The design reflects the Queen Anne revival style and consists of four storeys with a three-window range. The first-floor windows are sliding sashes with glazing bars in the upper portion, while the right-side window is narrower. The windows are separated by pilaster strip decoration, with a string course below and a frieze above. The upper floors feature a prominent coved cornice, interrupted by an off-centre open pediment. The second floor mirrors this design, and the third floor contains casement windows set in terracotta frames. The two left casements are joined under a single head, with an ornamental sunflower plaque positioned between them. The overall design achieves a subtle effect of asymmetry and balance using a limited range of materials.
