Description
The Load of Hay Tavern is a public house located at 94 Haverstock Hill in Camden, built in 1863 to replace an earlier establishment on the site. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with stucco dressings and features vermiculated stucco quoins.
It stands three storeys high with cellars and has a double fronted design that includes three windows, along with a single storey, three-window extension added in the 20th century at the north end. The ground floor has a public house frontage supported by Corinthian pilasters, which carry an entablature with a modillion cornice and a 20th-century fascia. The main entrance is recessed to the right, featuring engraved glass doors and screens, and is adorned with an elaborate wrought-iron grille with a foliate and scroll design that forms an arch over the entrance.
The ground floor also has segmental-arched openings, with windows and half-glazed double doors that have small panes. The upper floors are fitted with enriched architrave sashes; the first floor includes console bracketed pediments, with the central one being segmental, and a continuous balustraded balcony. The second floor features bracketed cornices and an enriched sill band. A console bracketed cornice with rosettes in the frieze is topped by a parapet pierced with a design of linked circles. The round-arched centerpiece is inscribed "Load of Hay Tavern rebuilt 1863," flanked by urns on dies and at the corners. The left-hand return has a panel in the balustrade inscribed "The Load of Hay Tavern." The interior has not been inspected.
