Description
No. 38 Steeles Road is a detached house and studio built in 1873 by architects T Batterbury and W F Huxley for the marine painter Edwin Hayes. The building is constructed of red brick and features hipped tiled roofs. It stands three storeys tall with a semi-basement and has four windows. The entrance is located on the right-hand return. The left side of the house projects and includes a ground floor bay window with three lights, which has gauged brick flat arches that are slightly shaped and friezes of small panes, topped with a tiled penthouse roof. A similar two-light bay window is found on the right side. On the first floor, there are recessed sashes with gauged brick flat arches above them. A plain brick band runs along the second floor level, which features two sashes on the left and one on the right. The eaves cornice is deep and plastered with a coved design, showcasing large pargeted flowers created by illustrator Frederick Barnard, who lived next door at No. 37. The interior has not been inspected.
