Description

No. 36 Steeles Road is a detached house and studio built in 1875 by architects T Batterbury and WF Huxley for the landscape painter CE Johnson. The building features red brick, which has been renewed on the gables, and has tiled double mansard roofs with Flemish type gables. It stands two storeys high, with an attic and semi-basement, and has three windows.

The entrance is located on the left-hand return. The main facade includes plain brick bands at the floor levels. The left-hand bay has slightly arched gauged brick heads above a sash window with a brick apron on both the ground and first floors, while the second floor features a gabled dormer. The right-hand bay slightly projects and has a bay window that extends from the semi-basement to the ground floor, topped with a moulded brick cornice and parapet. This bay also has slightly arched gauged brick heads above the upper floor sashes, with brick aprons on the second floor, and it terminates in a bracketed gable that includes two blind rectangular panels and an oculus at the apex.

The left-hand return features a brick pedimented doorcase with a round-arched entrance that has impost bands, a fanlight, and a panelled door. Above the door, there are two gables, one of which is shaped and ends in a banded chimney stack. The interior has not been inspected.
