Description
The Washington Public House, located on a corner site, was built around 1865 by developer Daniel Tidey. The building is constructed of stucco, with the ground floor designed to resemble ashlar masonry. It rises three stories above cellars. The front elevation, facing Englands Lane, has three windows, while the corner elevation, facing Belsize Park Gardens, has a canted projection containing the entrance and five windows, with two situated in a slightly projecting bay. The entrance is emphasised by Corinthian columns supporting an entablature, above double-glazed doors. Ground-floor windows have vermiculated surrounds, with most flanked by Corinthian columns supporting entablatures; the cornices of these embellishments continue above those without. First-floor sash windows are architraved with keystones, featuring alternating console bracketed segmental and triangular pediments, and bracketed sills. Second-floor sashes are similarly architraved with keystones. A projecting cornice and blocking course runs along the top of the building. Above the entrance is a painted portrait of George Washington set within a pedimented aedicule. The interior, dating to around 1890, features tiles, etched glass, and mahogany fittings.
