Description

39 Steeles Road is a detached house and studio built in 1872 by T. Batterbury and W.F. Huxley for the watercolour painter and wood engraver G.G. Kilburne. The building is constructed of red brick with a tiled roof that is hipped with a flat central section. It features a wide front with four windows grouped in pairs, and it has three storeys plus a semi-basement. The entrance is located on the right-hand return.

On the left side, there is a ground floor bay window that rises from the basement, consisting of three lights with stained glass in the top panes and a tiled penthouse roof. To the right of the bay window, there are paired, square-headed, recessed sashes with gauged brick pointed arch recesses, which have pargeted flowers above them. The building has stucco sill bands on the first and second floors, with recessed sashes on the first floor. The second floor windows are similar to those on the ground floor and also feature pargeted flowers. The right and left returns have deep, coved, plastered eaves cornices adorned with large pargeted flowers, which were executed by the illustrator Frederick Barnard, who lived at No. 37. The interior has not been inspected.
