Description

No. 16 Chalcot Gardens is a detached house built in 1881. It was likely originally a studio within the grounds of No. 39 Englands Lane. Around 1898, the house was extended to the front and rear by the architect CFA Voysey, for the artist AJ Whalley. The house is constructed of multi-colour stock brick with stone dressings around the windows. It has a tiled gabled roof and a tall brick chimney stack on the left side. The front facing the road has one window, with a five-light window on the ground floor and a four-light window above. Both windows have small leaded panes and stone cornices under relieving arches. The interior of the house has not been inspected. The illustrator Arthur Rackham lived at the property from 1903 to 1920, a fact commemorated by a GLC plaque.
