Description

No. 13, Eton Avenue is a detached house dating from around 1904, designed by Amos Faulkner and built by William Willett & Son. The house is constructed of red brick with a tile-hung first floor and a rendered gable, featuring decorative enrichment to the eaves. It has tiled hipped and gabled roofs, along with tall brick chimney stacks; the stack on the right return has a stone base and a modillion cornice. Dormers and overhanging eaves are also present. The design is asymmetrical. The house has two storeys and attics, with irregular window placement.

The right-hand projecting entrance bay has a large gable that sweeps down to the first floor. The central entrance is accessed via a projecting timber porch with paired pillars, featuring a diaper design to the capitals, linked by a balustrade with fretwork heart-shaped enrichment, supporting a barrel-vaulted hood. A step mirrors the outline of the hood. The first floor features a bowed five-light transom and mullion window with glazing bars, flanked by pilasters supporting a dentil cornice hood. Two smaller two-light windows are on either side of this, and there is a three-light attic window in the gable apex. A recessed bay to the left has casement windows with glazing bars. The right-hand return features a projecting gabled bay with a canted, bowed bay extending through the ground and first floors. The interior was not inspected. Drawings by Faulkner are held at the RIBA Drawings Collection.
