Description

No. 37, Eton Avenue is a detached house built around 1898 by Amos Faulkner, constructed by William Willett & Son. The house is of red brick with stone dressings, although the stone has been painted. It has tiled gable roofs and tall brick chimney stacks, most of which have been reduced in height and altered.

The house is two storeys and has attics, with three gabled bays arranged asymmetrically. All windows are fitted with glazing bars. The projecting right-hand entrance bay has a porch with a timber barrel vaulted hood supported by two stone columns. To the right of the porch is a three-light transom and mullion window with a small pediment. The first floor of this bay features a four-light window flanked by pilasters that support a frieze; the outer lights are separated from the central two by round-arched niches. A sill band connects to paired pilasters at the angles, supporting a projecting modillion cornice that extends around this bay only and forms the base of a modillion pediment, which has a radial patterned fanlight window set within a stone band. The central bay contains a tall three-light transom and mullion window, with the right-hand lights blocked. A two-light window is set in the gable above. The left-hand bay has a three-light transom and mullion window with a small pediment, and a single window to the right on the ground floor. The first floor of this bay has a five-light casement window, and a two-light window in the gable. A 1950s brick garage, of no particular interest, is attached to the right-hand side. The interior of the house has not been inspected. Drawings by Faulkner are held at the RIBA Drawings Collection.
