Description

Nos. 6-26 Spencer Street is a terrace of 11 houses, originally 12, built in the early 1870s. The properties have been converted into offices, a house, and a surgery. Constructed from red brick, Nos. 14 and 16 feature Flemish bond with light headers, while No. 26, which was formerly No. 28, has raised quoins at its corner. The buildings have dressings of calciferous sandstone, some of which are painted, and stone-bracketed metal gutters. The slate roof includes skylights and one gabled dormer, with original shared ridge brick chimney stacks.

The terrace is two storeys high with two bays, except for Nos. 24 and 26, which have three bays. No. 26 features a canted corner bay and a single-bay return on Lonsdale Street. The entrances have panelled doors and overlights within prostyle Tuscan porches, except for Nos. 6 and 8, which have Venetian porches adorned with red sandstone colonnettes, leaf capitals, and dentilled cornices. Nos. 22 and 24 have doorcases, with No. 24 featuring pilasters, while No. 26 has a plain stone surround. The canted bay windows are present on most houses, except for Nos. 6 and 8, which have squared bay windows with dentilled cornices. Above these, sash windows are set in eared architraves with bracketed sills, and some lintels display keystone features. Between Nos. 22 and 24 is a large segmental quoined carriage archway. The interiors have not been inspected.
