Description

No. 1 Victoria Place is a house that has been converted into an office. It was built in the late 1830s, likely designed by John Hodgson of Carlisle. The building features calciferous sandstone ashlar on a moulded plinth, with a string course, cornice, and a central parapet panel that ends in scrolled brackets. The graduated slate roof has coped gables and rebuilt brick chimney stacks at both ends and along the ridge. The structure is two storeys high and has a symmetrical five-bay layout with a double-depth plan.

The entrance has a central panelled door with an overlight, accessed by steps and set within a prostyle Ionic porch. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are placed in plain stone reveals above recessed aprons. There are small cellar vent openings beneath the ground-floor windows. The window above the entrance is larger, framed by a stone architrave and topped with a console-bracketed cornice.

Inside, the building has panelled doors in painted wooden architraves and panelled internal shutters for each front window. The stone staircase features patterned cast-iron balusters and a moulded wooden handrail. The principal rooms are adorned with moulded plaster ceiling cornices and roundels, along with stone fireplaces. Historical records from the 1841 census indicate that Robert Bendal, an attorney, resided in this house, making it one of the first two houses on the street, alongside No. 2. As Robert Bendal was living at Devonshire Street in 1837, it is likely that the house was constructed between 1837 and 1841.
