Description

2 and 4 Spencer Street are two houses that have been converted into one office space. They were built in the mid to late 1870s and are constructed of red brick on a chamfered calciferous sandstone plinth, with all dressings made of this material, some of which are partly painted. The buildings feature V-jointed quoins at the corners and a stone-bracketed metal gutter. The roofs are covered with graduated slate and are hipped at the corners, with skylights and original shared ridge brick chimney stacks. The return of No. 2 is made of ashlar.

No. 2 is two storeys high with three bays and a single-bay return facing Victoria Place. It has a central panelled door with an overlight, accessed by steps, and is set within a pilastered doorcase. There is a left through-passage with a plank door in a stone surround, and to the right, there is a squared bay window along with a sash window, both framed by eared stone architraves with bracketed sills and keystone features; similar windows are found on the return. No. 4 is also two storeys high but has two bays and a higher roof line. It features a panelled door with an overlight within a prostyle Tuscan porch. The windows are similar to those of No. 2 but do not include a bay window. The interiors have not been inspected.
