Description

Nos. 24 and 26 are two houses from the 1830s, now serving as a bank and offices. They are constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar, featuring rustication on the ground floor, a string course, an eaves cornice, and an open balustraded parapet. The roof is covered with graduated slate and has rendered ridge and end chimney stacks. Each house has three storeys and three bays, with a double-depth plan. The cellar voids still have their patterned cast-iron railings and steps leading down to the cellar doors.

The left entrances are accessed via steps and have panelled doors with overlights, set in Roman Doric prostyle porches that are topped with false open parapets. The sash windows, which have glazing bars in No. 26, are set in plain stone reveals on the cellar and ground floor, and in stone architraves above, complete with cornices and pierced aprons. The attic windows are framed in eared architraves.

Inside, the buildings retain much original detail, including panelled doors in eared architraves and panelled internal shutters at some first-floor windows. No. 26 features moulded plaster ceiling cornices with angle heads in the hallway, as well as panelled plaster ceiling arches at the stairs. The original stone stairs are complemented by patterned cast-iron balusters and moulded wooden handrails.
