Description
Nos. 37 and 39 are two houses in a row, now functioning as a bank and office, built in the late 1830s by Thomas Nelson of Carlisle. They are constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar on a red sandstone ashlar chamfered plinth, featuring a cornice and solid parapet. The roof is made of graduated greenslate and includes gabled and hipped dormers, along with a 19th-century end brick chimney stack.
The buildings are two storeys high, with four bays each, and are designed in a double-depth plan. Each house has an off-centre panelled door with an overlight, set within a columned surround. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are placed in plain stone reveals with stone sills.
Inside, the interiors boast moulded plaster ceiling cornices and internal panelled shutters at the front windows. No. 37 has undergone ground floor alterations, while No. 39 retains its original cantilever stone staircase, which features scrolled cast-iron balusters and a moulded mahogany handrail, along with original panelled doors.
A notable feature is the scrolled wrought-iron overthrow and lamp bracket located in front of No. 37. Historically, Thomas Nelson lived in Earl Street in 1837 and moved to Lowther Street by 1844. An early 20th-century illustration shows No. 37 as the Judge's Residence.
