Description
No. 22, including the railings at the front, is an office building dated and inscribed with "JJS 1892" for J Jackson Saint, Chartered Accountants. It is constructed of red sandstone ashlar with calciferous sandstone dressings, featuring flush quoins, moulded sill bands, and a bracketed cornice. The building has a central Dutch gable topped with a carved leaf finial and a slate roof that is hidden by the gable. Original end brick chimney stacks are present. The structure is three and a half storeys high and has two bays of considerable depth, designed in the Gothic style.
The right door is accessed by steps and features cusped panels and an overlight, set within a polished granite colonnette surround. Paired sash windows are framed by pilaster and colonnette surrounds, with door and window heads adorned with painted arches and blind decorative panels. The smaller windows in the gable are centrally located.
Inside, there is a mosaic-tiled lobby and a panelled oak screen. The ceilings are decorated with moulded plaster panels, cornices, and central roundels. The original wooden staircase on the right has turned balusters and a carved leaf newel post, with a turned upper newel post.
Additionally, there are scrolled wrought-iron railings around the basement void. The front elevation and block plans of the proposed premises, dated 1892, are archived at the Cumbria County Record Office, reference DX/539/4.
