Description
This is a well-preserved terrace of early 19th century brick houses, located at Nos 27 to 35 Lower Brook Street. The terrace comprises fifteen windows in total, with each house originally having three windows per floor. The houses are three storeys high and include basements. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, set in plain reveals, and topped with stone lintels and keystones. Stone bands run horizontally at ground and first floor levels. Nos 27 and 35, the corner houses, project slightly and are flanked by pilasters. The doorways have rectangular fanlights and are approached by stone steps. No. 27 has a wooden architrave with a cornice supported by console brackets. Nos 29 and 31 feature good Tuscan porches with fluted columns, a decorative frieze, and cornices. No. 33 has plain reveals to the entrance, while No. 35 has a similar Tuscan porch with plain columns, a frieze, and cornice. Iron railings with spearheads, set on stone plinths, protect the basements. No. 27 has an early 19th century iron archway with a lamp support above the entrance. The roofs are slate covered. Internal features of early 19th century date, including moulded ceilings and staircases, remain. Nos 19 to 39 (odd) are designated as a group.
