Description

No. 23 and No. 25 on High Street is a row that includes a shop and two houses, dating from the 17th century but refronted in the mid-19th century. The building has two storeys, with attics in some parts. It is timber-framed, featuring a colour-washed brick front and a red brick double gable with a string course on the south side. There is an internal chimney stack with a large plain red brick shaft. The roof has two spans; the front range is covered with slates, while the rear is covered with pantiles.

The shop on the left has a double front with two large canted bay windows and a central door that is accessed by steps. There are three additional windows on the ground floor, which are small-paned sashes set in deep reveals. On the left side of the upper floor, there is one similar window, along with five smaller sashes that have vertical bars, all in deep reveals. Above the shop, there is one blank opening.

The door to No. 23 features six raised fielded panels, a flat pediment, and plain console brackets, along with a 19th-century foot-scraper. The door to No. 25 has flush panels, a flat pediment, and plain console brackets, and is also accessed by a flight of steps with plain cast iron railings and a curved handrail. At the rear, facing Commister Lane, there is a range of mid-19th century outbuildings constructed from random flint and red brick, with pantiled roofs, comprising parts that are one and a half and two storeys high.
