Description

Nos. 14-20 on South Street is a building that was originally a house and is now used as shops. It features elements from the 18th century, likely with some parts dating back even earlier, and has undergone later alterations and additions. The structure is timber framed and faced with red brick. The left side has a red plain tiled roof, while the right side has a 20th-century pantile roof. There are large red brick chimney stacks on the left and central sections of the building.

The building is two storeys high with a parapet and has a five-window range. The first, second, and fourth windows are tripartite small paned vertically sliding sashes, the fifth is a small paned vertically sliding sash, and the central window is blocked. All windows feature gauged brick arches, and there is a circular tie plate on the right side. Below the parapet, there are five wrought iron brackets.

On the ground floor, No. 20 is plastered and has tripartite vertically sliding sash windows on both the right and left sides, with a recessed 20th-century door in between. The central entrance has a six-panelled door with a rayed semi-circular fanlight, and it is flanked by half columns with capitals and bases, topped with a moulded open pediment that has dentilled soffits. The right side features 19th-century double shop fronts with end and central pilasters, and the shop windows on the left are angled towards the recessed right doors.
