Description
10 and 12 South Street are two shops with features from the 18th century that have origins from the 16th century or earlier. The buildings are timber framed and faced with red brick. No. 12 has red tiles from the 20th century, while No. 10 has red plain tiles. Each shop has a chimney stack on the right side, with the stack for No. 10 shared with No. 8. The buildings are two storeys high and have a three-window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes.
The ground floor of No. 12 features a 19th-century shop front with two three-light bays, angle shafts with moulded capitals, and segmental heads that extend across the front of a recessed central door, creating a three-bay arcade. There is a fascia and cornice above this shop front. To the right of No. 12, there is a round-headed doorway on the left, a central small paned angled oriel window, and a fixed window on the right with a gauged brick arch. Inside, some timber framing is visible, with the rear wall side girt and wall studs appearing to be of 16th-century origin.
