Description
The building at 2 South Street is a shop, dating from the 18th or 19th century, with possible earlier origins, and subject to later alterations and additions. It is timber-framed and plastered, with a red plain tiled roof. A parapet verge is present on the right return gable, and a large rear red brick chimney stack rises from the roof. The building is two storeys and an attic, with a catslide dormer to the left. A central band runs across the facade. The two-window range features vertically sliding sash windows with moulded plaster surrounds. A similar window is located on the ground floor to the left. The right shop bay has five lights with a central transom and segmental heads, a fascia, and a canopy above. A recessed door is situated far right, flanked by pilasters with capitals and bases, leading to a panelled door with a top light. Originally a baker’s shop, the right return has a vertically boarded door with a segmental arch over, believed to have formerly served as access to a bake oven. The right return also features an attic window to the gable, along with three first-floor and two ground-floor windows, all dating to the 19th century, and a 19th-century door situated between them.
