Description

A corner block of shops with a return and house to South Street, dating from the 19th century. The building is constructed of gault brick with a grey slate roof, hipped at the angles to South Street. There are three chimney stacks to West Street and two to South Street.

The building is two storeys high, with a painted parapet and a painted, curved corner where West Street meets South Street. The first floor has four vertically sliding sash windows with painted gauged arches to West Street, and four similar windows to South Street set within brick recessed arches with painted impost details.

The ground floor of the house on the South Street side has a central doorway approached by steps, with a stucco surround and moulded scroll brackets to a flat canopy. It has a two-panel door with a fanlight above. Flanking the doorway are windows matching those of the first floor. To the left of the door are two basement grilles with gauged arches.

The shop front on South Street has a moulded fascia and cornice that continues over a two-light shop window and recessed entrance. At the corner, there is a recessed entrance, and in West Street, there is a two-light shop window. Further along West Street are two three-light shop windows with a recessed door between, all dating to the 19th century, and a 20th-century shop window with a door to the left. The 19th-century shop windows and doors have moulded semi-circular pilasters with capitals and bases. Moulded window cills are visible, and some of these details may remain under the later 20th-century shop front of No. 5.
