Description

Nos. 53-57 on High Street in Headcorn is a house and shops dating from the 18th century, with later alterations. The ground floor features a chequered pattern of red and grey brick, while the first floor is made of patched red brick, partly in Flemish bond. The right gable end has mathematical tiles on the first floor, with banded plain and fishscale tiles above. The building has a plain tile roof and consists of two storeys plus a garret. Triangular wooden modillions decorate the eaves cornice, and the roof is half-hipped with a brick stack on the rear slope, positioned to the left of centre. The windows are arranged irregularly, with three in total: one 16-pane sash in an open box towards the left end, and two recessed sashes with marginal glazing bars towards the right. The ground floor includes two shop fronts; No. 53 has a boarded door with a segmental head on the left end, while Nos. 55 and 57 have boarded double doors slightly to the right of the stack. A continuous pentice supported by straight braces features weatherboarding at the ends and a plain tile roof. There are later 19th-century additions at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
