Description

This building, known as The Mortgage Shop, Lloyds Bank, and A.P. Davis, Chemist, is a shop row located on Headcorn High Street. Number 33 dates from the early 17th century or earlier, while numbers 35 and 37 are from the mid-19th century, possibly incorporating earlier elements. Number 33 features a timber frame with painted tile-hanging on the first floor, while numbers 35 and 37 are constructed of red brick with occasional grey headers in Flemish bond. The roofs are covered with plain tiles.

Numbers 35 and 37 are aligned parallel to the street, while number 33 is positioned at right angles to the left, with its ground floor flush with number 35. Number 33 has two timber-framed bays, one of which may have originally been built as a shop. The building is two storeys tall, with number 33 jettied at both the front and rear. It has a steeply-pitched hipped roof that is higher than the roofs of numbers 35 and 37, which features a ridge stack towards the left end of number 35.

The fenestration is irregular, with three windows: one four-pane sash window in number 33, and one four-pane and one six-pane sash window in open boxes for numbers 35 and 37. Number 33 has a canted plate-glass shop front that is partly beneath the jetty, while the shop fronts of numbers 35 and 37 have small rectangular panes. There are half-glazed doors located beneath the jetty to the right of number 33, to the right side of number 35, and at the centre of number 37.

The interior has only been partially inspected. Number 33 reveals exposed framing, with evidence of partitions and the position of the stairs. There is a small fireplace on the first floor of number 33, featuring a four-centred arched wooden bressumer.
