Description
The Institute is a building dating from 1866, located on the north side of Headcorn High Street, alongside a row of houses from the mid-19th century. It features chequered red and grey brick with a plain tile roof and is positioned at right angles to the road. The Institute stands two storeys high on a brick plinth, with a broad doubly-cogged brick band above the ground and first-floor windows, which also serves as a border to the coping of the gable. The gable has kneelers and an apex raised on a rectangular plinth. The eaves of the adjacent house row are significantly lower. There is a brick stack to the left of the Institute and ridge stacks at each end of the house row.
The Institute has a regular three-window front with recessed four-pane sashes that have rendered segmental heads. The houses numbered 15 to 19 have irregular fenestration, featuring three recessed four-pane sashes with splayed brick voussoirs. The ground floor of the Institute includes a shop front with double doors to the right. Number 15 has a panelled door, while number 17 has a 20th-century door positioned between the left and central first-floor windows. Number 19 also has a shop front, incorporating a half-glazed door to the right. A datestone indicating the year 1866 is visible on the gable of the Institute. The interiors were not inspected, but the building is included for its group value with the adjacent houses.
