Description
Mortley and the Village Shop is a shop row and dwelling that dates back to the 16th century and earlier, with alterations and additions from the 18th century and later. The building is timber framed, featuring a ground floor made of painted brick and a first floor that is tile-hung. The long left side of the wing has exposed studding with rendered infilling. The structure consists of two timber-framed bays, with a cross-wing on the left that has approximately three timber-framed bays projecting to the front and rear. The front bay of the wing was likely built as a shop. There is a separately framed section to the right of the stack that may be older. The building has two storeys and shows evidence of a continuous jetty on the two left timber-framed bays of the main range. The wing has a hipped roof with a ridge that is lower than that of the main range, which has a roof in two sections, the right section being higher. There is a ridge stack at the left end of the right section, towards the center of the main range, and two truncated stacks on the left side of the wing. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of five 3-light casements: one in the wing, one in the left section of the main range, and three, set lower, in the right section. The ground floor shop fronts are from the 20th century, featuring half-glazed doors leading to Mortley at the left end of the main range and to the Village Shop at the right end. The interior has only been partly inspected, revealing exposed framing in Mortley with a moulded beam over what is likely the shop front of the wing, and a combed plaster panel on the first floor of the wing.
