Description

Manor Cottages and the attached pump are a house, originally a barn, dating from the 16th century or earlier. The building was converted into cottages in the 18th century and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The left section is of painted brick, while the right section has painted brick to the ground floor and banded plain and fishscale tiles to the first floor. It has a plain tile roof. The building comprises three timber-framed bays with a rear aisle, and later lean-tos. It is two storeys and has attics. The left section features a dentilled brick eaves cornice, and a steeply pitched hipped roof. Brick stacks are visible on the front slope of the roof towards the left end and within the lean-to at the right end of the right section. Two hipped dormers are present. The fenestration is irregular, with four casements; two two-light casements to the left section and one two-light and one single-light to the right section. A small canted bay window is located towards the centre. A ribbed door is at the left end of the right section, with a blocked door at the left end. End lean-tos are present. A central hipped rear stair turret, thought to have been a porch to the barn, is a notable feature. A small iron pump is situated against the right side of the front elevation, originally positioned on the south side of High Street. The interior reveals exposed timber framing, curved passing shores to the rear aisle, jowled principal posts, chamfered beams and joists, and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
