Description
Nos. 40 and 42 High Street is a house made of colour-washed gault brick, which has been divided unevenly into two parts and includes two shops. The front of the building features the inscription "J Nixon J.W. 1851" cut into the brickwork.
The structure has two storeys and a hipped slate roof with an internal chimney stack. There are two canted bay windows with moulded heads to the frames and replacement sashes dating from around 1900. On the left side, there is a 20th-century shop window. The upper floor has three small-paned sash windows. The entrance door is off-centre and has reeded jambs, a flat pediment, a modillion cornice, and a metope frieze. To the extreme right, there is a plain garden door. A John Nixon is mentioned in White's Directory of Suffolk from 1844 as the 'Inspector of weights and measures' in Ixworth.
