Description

Mulley's Motorways and House is a building that serves as both a house and an office, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of gault brick with a slate roof and has two storeys. The façade features five windows with small-paned sashes set in eased frames that have deep reveals. A large rounded central bay is present on the upper storey, with window surrounds adorned with fluted pilasters and a dentil cornice. There is a 20th-century carriage entry below, and to the left, remnants of a shop window and door can be seen. Attached to the front wall and cellar below are two petrol pumps, with brick tanks located in the cellar. The delivery arms extend from the pumps to the front wall and can be swung for vehicle delivery. The pumps are labelled Beckmeter, a design that was first licensed in 1935. Historically, this building has likely been associated with various forms of transport, as it was already an omnibus company before Mr. J. Mulley purchased the property in 1939. It probably served as the base for the carriers run by the Reeve family from around 1900 until after World War I, and a house with attached yards is depicted on the Tithe map of 1847.
