Description
No. 19 High Street is a house that was formerly a shop, dating from the mid-19th century. The front is made of colour-washed brick, while the core is timber-framed and jettied, originating from the early 16th century. The building has two storeys and a basic two-cell plan, with a chimney stack on the rear wall. The jetty is underbuilt in brick from the early 17th century, and the roof was raised and slated in the mid-19th century. There are two square bay windows supported on metal bars, with a door from around 1960 situated between them. The upper floor features 20th-century two-light casements. There are extensions at the rear. Notably, a small patriarchal cross is cut into the brickwork to the right of the door. The house was home to Joseph Warren (1792-1876), a watch and clock maker, and a respected local antiquarian, for many years.
