Description

Nos. 3 and 5 Meddon Street is a house with a shop that has been converted into two houses. It is likely from the 17th century and was remodeled in the early to mid-19th century. The building has solid rendered walls and a slate roof. There is a rendered chimney on the left gable end and a large, old red-brick chimney, which has been rebuilt at the top, on the rear wall to the right, visible from Torridge Hill. There is also a small red-brick chimney on the rear wall to the left. The layout is probably two rooms wide and one room deep with a central passage, featuring an old rear wing to the right and later lean-tos to the rear left. The building is two storeys tall with a garret in the front range and single-storey lean-tos. It has a three-window range. The central door, which leads to No. 3, is a six-panelled door with a knocker, and the top two panels are now glazed. There are flanking pilasters and a cornice on consoles, with the cornice continuing across the former shop front at No. 5, which now has a late 20th-century door and window. There is a matching pilaster and console at the right-hand end. To the left of the ground storey at No. 3, there is a plain sash window. The second storey and the two garret windows have six-paned sashes, with the garret windows starting below eaves level and finished with small triangular gables. The interior has not been inspected.
