Description
No. 4 Church Street is a house, possibly with a former shop, dating from the early to mid 19th century. It features solid rendered walls and a slated roof, with rendered chimneys on each side wall, the left one apparently shared with No. 2, both topped with round red pots. The building is two storeys high with a garret and has a basement that is exposed to Church Hill East at the rear due to the sloping ground.
The façade is two windows wide, with a doorway replacing the right-hand ground-storey window. This doorway is flanked by pilasters and has an entablature decorated with a frieze featuring anthemions and other motifs. To the left, there is a wide window also flanked by pilasters, which has an altered entablature with shaped brackets, likely added later in the 19th century for use as a shop window. The upper-storey windows are fitted with 6-paned sashes.
On the rear wall facing Church Hill East, there is a round-arched doorway and a window in the basement. The lower part of the window appears to have been originally closed with external shutters, indicated by an iron hinge, while the upper part features a 2-light small-paned wood casement. The ground-storey windows and the left-hand second-storey window also have 6-paned sashes. Additionally, there are two small garret windows situated under the eaves.
