Description
Estate cottages numbers 97 and 98 were built around 1840, possibly designed by Anthony Salvin, who was active at Helmingham Hall around 1841. The cottages are constructed of brick in Flemish bond and feature a moulded brick stack on the party wall. They have pantile roofs with ornamental vergeboards on the facing gable and dormer, and slightly swept eaves. The buildings are two storeys tall with an outshut at the rear; the left unit has a facing gable wing that slightly projects, while the right unit has a simple half dormer. The windows are flat-arched, and the entrances are four-centred and arched, with doors that maintain an authentic design. The cottages exhibit a picturesque style that blends vernacular forms with elements of the 'cottage orne' tradition. Cottages 98-110, which span the boundary between Framsden and Helmingham, form a group.
