Description
Estate cottages numbers 5 and 6 were built around 1840, possibly designed by Anthony Salvin, who worked at Helmingham Hall around 1841. The cottages are constructed of brick in Flemish bond and feature a moulded brick stack on the party wall. They have pantile roofs with ornamental vergeboards on the facing gables and slightly swept eaves. The buildings are two storeys high with an outshut at the rear. Each outer range has a four-centred, arched entrance with doors of an original design, leading to a pair of identical facing gables inside. The cottages exhibit a picturesque style that blends vernacular forms with elements of the 'cottage orne' tradition. They are part of a group that includes cottages 3-8, 15-20, the Estate Yard, the Old Post Office near the crossroads to the north, and the Old Forge.
