Description
Estate Cottages numbers 3 and 4 are a pair of estate cottages built around 1840, possibly designed by Anthony Salvin, who was active at Helmingham Hall around 1841. The cottages are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, featuring a moulded brick stack on the party wall. They have pantile roofs with ornamental vergeboards on the facing gable and dormer, and slightly swept eaves. The buildings are two storeys high with a rear outshut; the left unit has a half dormer that breaks the eaves, while the right unit features a facing gable. The windows are flat-arched, and there are four-centred, arched entrances in the outer ranges with doors of original design. The cottages exhibit a picturesque style that blends vernacular forms with elements of the 'cottage orne' tradition. They are part of a group that includes cottages 3-8, 15-20, the Estate Yard, the Old Post Office near the crossroads to the north, and the Old Forge.
